Historic Charleston Foundation introduced its reproductions program in 1972 as an innovative way to further the Foundation's restoration and preservation efforts. The program coordinates production of a broad range of home furnishings and accessories with a strong national appeal and whose origins are found in Charleston's history, culture, decorative arts and architecture.

The Historic Charleston Collection of products is vast and diverse, encompassing home furnishings, both indoor and outdoor; home improvement items, including paint colors; fabrics and wall coverings; home accessories; tabletop; linens; and all manner of general accessories and gifts. A small portion of sales generated by HCF licensees is donated back to the Foundation in royalties, which are used to support its preservation efforts. Each manufacturer adds to the collection continuously and new licensees are added to the program each year.

The program seeks licensees with a well-developed network of national and international distribution channels. Products fit into one of three categories: reproductions, adaptations or inspirations. Fine furnishings made by master craftsmen in Charleston, or imported from abroad, are part of Charleston's unique heritage, including furniture, silver, porcelains, crystal, luxurious fabrics and decorative accessories.

Charleston antiques followed the styles popular in England and France. Designs, as well as objects, crossed the Atlantic quickly as Charleston was both rich and sophisticated. Local craftsmen followed the trends and created Charleston-made versions which are sought after by collectors today. Fortunately, many of these objects remain in Charleston. Heirlooms may be found all over the city and outlaying areas in public and private homes, plantations and public museums.

Items chosen to be reproduced, adapted or inspired are produced under license to major manufacturers and are distributed by them both nationally and internationally. More than 30 manufacturers have been licensed by Historic Charleston Foundation to produce this wide-ranging collection.

Licensed products are sold throughout the nation and internationally in fine specialty stores, department stores, furniture stores and catalogs. Regionally and locally, Historic Charleston Licensed Products are sold by numerous retail entities from gift and specialty shops to furniture dealers.
